The DSP-based RES is used in test facilities, radar sites, and training facilities for high-fidelity radar performance verification, radar production testing, radar operator training, and radar model ECCM technique development. Operating in a “direct connect/inject” configuration at the radar’s IF or RF frequency, the DSP-based RES is the technology of choice for production quantities of RES (typically 3 or more RES systems). The DSP-based RES is unique in that it generates most of the waveform modulations digitally, eliminating costly analog and RF modulation circuitry. This also allows more cost-effective generation of higher numbers of targets simultaneously in the radar beam. This is particularly important with long-range “air surveillance” radars. The DSP-based RES also exhibits higher reliability due to the reduction of analog/IF/RF circuitry needed.

The DSP-based RES requires information from custom radar/antenna data buses for all the radar antenna data and pulse/PRI/dwell characteristics to faithfully generate and modulate the radar waveforms. If injected at an IF frequency, the RES may also be required to model the various radar circuitry that was bypassed via IF injection.
